United Kennel Club (UKC) Trials began as an attempt to present more realistic hunting scenarios to test a dog.. UKC offers retriever and pointing dog events. The events are similar to AKC events however they do have a few differences. A key difference for the retriever tests is that they are run with a gun and a blank shell that is discharged next to the dog. AKC events only allow participants to have an empty or fake gun while the bird throwers, whom are a distance from the dog, fire the shot. A key difference for the UKC pointing events is that they are run on foot rather than the traditional horse. This gives a more realistic hunting scenario in the eyes of the UKC. Lastly, UKC does present an Upland Test for retrievers to be judged. For this test, the retriever must sit to through the flushing of the bird and be steady through the shot, only retrieving upon command.
