Tournament hunting are upland hunting competitions available to both retriever and pointer breeds. These are competitions between dogs within a division. Tournament hunting is unique in that a dog is not judged but scored and timed. For instance, when the dog finds a bird in the field the judge does not rate how the dog found the bird but rather awarded points for finding and flushing or pointing the bird. The winner is determined by how quickly the dog finds the required amount of upland game and deliver the retrieves to hand.
There are a number of different series-running tournament hunting events today. The oldest events have historically been the Wisconsin Championship Series and the North American Tournament Hunting Association. One of the most recent additions to this list is the Bird Dog Challenge (BDC). The BDC has worked with many different series promoters to develop a nationally recognized point system and national tournaments called Super Majors.
