American Pointing Labrador Association (APLA) is a fairly new organization that recognizes the retriever breed's ability to retrieve downed game as well as upland hunt. The program began recognizing that some retriever dogs naturally developed a "pause" or point prior to flushing the game. The APLA has developed test standards for pointing retrievers but retriever tests. The titles include the Certified Point Retriever (CPR), Advanced Pointing Retriever (APR), Master Pointing Retriever (MPR), and Grand Master Pointing Retriever (GMPR).
